Who
should attend a General Orientation?
Because the course emphasizes the mission, it is
valuable for all those involved with Special
Olympics in order to understand and work toward
furthering our mission. It is the goal of
Special Olympics to have every volunteer, coach,
family member, etc. attend a General Orientation
within six months of beginning involvement. A
General Orientation is a requirement for coach
certification.
My
local program is entering three teams in the State
Basketball tournament. How many certified
coaches must I have?
The head coach of each team entered must be
certified and present courtside. The answer is
three.
Do
I need to be certified to coach at local or area
competitions?
No - the coaches certification program is mandatory
at the State-level only, but is recommended to
increase your knowledge and expertise with our
athletes at any level of the program.
What
level of certification must I have to coach at
State-level competitions?
All coaches, regardless of team or individual
sports, must possess the minimum Level 1
certification to coach at State-level competitions,
but are expected to attend a Level 2 training at
their earliest convenience.
My
local program will be taking athletes to the State
Summer Games in athletics, bowling, and power lifting.
How many certified coaches do I need?
You local program will need to have at least one
certified coach in each of the three sports.
The certified coach must also be on-site during the
competition.
Where
and when will the General Orientation be conducted?
General Orientations will be conducted prior to each
Level 2 coaches training school and annually at the
State Conference.
I
am ready to enter swimmers in the Aquatics
Championships and realize my head coach is not
certified. What should I do?
Entry materials for each State-level sport will
include a sport-specific certification test.
Your coach should complete the test and return it with
your entry forms.
